Dalton, GA – Dalton Public Schools is proud to announce the appointment of Lauri Johnson as the new Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Johnson brings an extensive background in educational leadership, with more than two decades of experience in various roles that have significantly impacted student achievement, teacher development, and school improvement.
Johnson joined Dalton Public Schools in 2019 as principal of Dalton Middle School, where she served for two years before becoming principal of Hammond Creek Middle School in 2021. During her tenure at Hammond Creek, Johnson has been instrumental in fostering a culture of academic excellence and inclusivity, particularly through her initiatives to support bilingualism and student achievement.
Prior to joining Dalton Public Schools, Johnson served as the Director of Organizational Improvement at the Southern Regional Education Board (2014–2019), where she worked closely with secondary principals to enhance math and literacy instruction, as well as teacher improvement efforts. In addition, Johnson held multiple leadership positions with City Schools of Decatur, including Director of Secondary Education (2014), Principal of Decatur High School (2006–2014), Assistant Principal (2004–2006), and Media Specialist (1999–2004).
Johnson’s educational background is equally impressive. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook, a master’s degree in Library Science from the University at Albany, SUNY, and an Educational Leadership Add-On Certificate from the University of Georgia. She has also completed Education Specialist (Ed.S.) coursework in Curriculum and Instruction at Georgia State University.

As Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Johnson will oversee key district initiatives, including curriculum development, instructional improvement, and strategic planning. Her leadership will play a vital role in shaping the district’s future while ensuring the continued success of Dalton Public Schools’ students and staff. While transitioning to this leadership position, she will continue to serve as principal of Hammond Creek Middle School through the end of the current school year, ensuring a smooth transition for staff, students, and families.
